Mountaintop Remodel
Two-tone StarMark cabinetry, white quartz countertops, and a guest suite built for family visits make this Asheville mountaintop remodel feel like home.
Featured in Carolina Home + Garden.
When these homeowners bought the Asheville mountain home they'd been renting for two summers, they loved almost everything about it. The one big problem was space. With no garage, their trash cans and bicycles were living in the living room, and there wasn't enough room for family to stay.
HomeSource Builders added a garage and a new lower level with guest bedrooms, a gym, a laundry room, and a family room. Inside, HomeSource Design Center designer Christy Dunlap led the cabinetry and finish selections, working alongside Mark Masters Architecture and Traci Kearns of Alchemy Design Studio.

Two-Tone Kitchen Cabinets in Oak and Black
The kitchen is the centerpiece of this remodel. Christy paired StarMark Cabinetry frames in a cappuccino-stained oak with black-painted maple doors. The warm wood keeps the black from feeling heavy, and the black gives the oak a cleaner, more modern edge. Together, they land somewhere between modern and timeless, exactly what the homeowners wanted.
Tall cabinets on each side of the kitchen hold stacked wall ovens and a paneled refrigerator, so the appliances blend right into the cabinetry. Glass-front upper cabinets flank the black range hood, and the island has an open shelf at its center for cookbooks or serving pieces. White quartz countertops from HomeSource Design Center balance the dark cabinetry, keep the kitchen bright, and hold up to daily cooking and entertaining.
Once the kitchen was finished, the homeowner liked it so much that she wanted the morning kitchen and wine bar to match. Christy carried the same oak and black finishes into both spaces, which ties the original house and the new addition together.
Guest Suite Design with Durable, Family-Friendly Finishes
The homeowners' kids and grandkids visit often, so the new guest suite needed to be comfortable and durable. HomeSource Design Center supplied luxury vinyl plank flooring for the guest bedroom. It has the warm look of wood, handles spills and heavy foot traffic, and doesn't need special care. In the guest bath, porcelain tile in layered shades of gray from HomeSource Design Center pairs with a floating double vanity and matte black fixtures for a clean, modern look.
The HomeSource Difference
This remodel started with a steep mountainside lot and a long list of practical needs. From the two-tone kitchen to the guest suite, every selection was made to fit how this family lives and entertains. Now there's room for everyone, and a view worth sharing.
